APT describes the vessel as the largest wood-fired paddlesteamer in the Southern Hemisphere and the only five-star paddlesteamer in the world. It has 19 staterooms, each with an ensuite, air-conditioning, complimentary Starlink Wi-Fi and deck access, plus a lounge, restaurant and a passenger lift to all decks. Propulsion is a hybrid diesel/steam system built around a 1907 wood-fired steam engine.
Guests can expect daily excursions to farm stations, wineries and heritage towns, along with riverside barbecues by campfire.

Vic Government investment
The Victorian Government’s Regional Tourism Investment Fund contributed $2.25 million to the project. Tourism minister Natalie Suleyman said the vessel “was built by Victorians and will attract more visitors to one of our most iconic waterways”.
APT Travel Group CEO David Cox said the launch was a proud moment as the company heads towards its centenary in 2027.
“The Murray River is woven into this country’s history, and for us to now operate a vessel that keeps that history alive is something we’re very proud of,” he said.
Australian Star will run a revolving program of three and four-night cruises, which guests can combine into a seven-night sailing. Fares start from $3045 per person, twin-share, for a three-night cruise. They include return rail transfers from Melbourne to Echuca, meals, shore excursions, gratuities, selected beers and wines with dinner, and soft drinks, water and tea/coffee throughout. APT also offers its own all-inclusive seven-night itineraries on selected dates.
The vessel joins the 16-guest PS Emmylou, which will continue to offer multi-day cruises from Echuca.
Travel advisors can earn 10 per cent commission on Murray River Paddlesteamers bookings. Bookings are available on 03 5482 5244 or at mrps.com.au.
